Fur Free Brighton

Coalition for the Abolition of the Fur Trade

The majority of fur sold in the UK comes originally from China and alongside the traditional furs of mink and fox we are now seeing more examples of rabbit and alarmingly cat and dog furs. It should also be noted that China has no animal welfare regulations or legislation. The picture above is of a rabbit on sale at a Chinese market. The rabbit was still alive and conscious when the picture was taken. This is the reality of fur and fur trim.

LOOPHOLE IN E.U. LAW ON CAT AND DOG FUR IMPORTS

The European Parliament is finally inclined to ban cat/dog fur imports into Europe. However, if the law is passed as it is, a loophole  will simply defeat its purpose. This loophole is similar to the $150 loophole in the US where cat/dog fur importation is illegal, but imports under $150 do not have to be labeled as fur--cat/dog fur is part of the so called "budget" fur so most of them cost less than that! The loophole in Europe will allow fur from dogs or cats raised for food in China. Many European countries have already rejected this loophole--which is a good sign.  Nevertheless, we need to keep up the pressure so this loophole is rejected by 100% of the European countries. Please write to the head of the European Parliament who is the key person to write to.  The Anti-Fur Society group will be sending a letter representing about 1000 people who signed the petition.  If you wish to be on that list, please send your name, country/city and email  antifurdemo@msn.com

REMEMBER THIS: NO EUROPEAN MARKET = NO CAT AND DOG FUR FARMS IN CHINA!

IN THE NAME OF MILLIONS OF CATS AND DOGS IN CHINA PLEASE WRITE TO:

Commissioner Markos Kyprianou
Mr. Kyprianou's FAX 003222981499

Commissioner Markos Kyprianou,
Commissioner for Consumer Affairs,
The European Commission,
Rue de la Loi, B-1049
Bruxelles, BELGIUM

If Europe passes this ban without the loophole, chances are we'll be seeing the end of the dog/cat fur farms in China.

Cat and Dog fur imports to be banned in the E.U.

On November 21st we welcomed the announcement that the European Commission intends to ban the import of cat and dog fur into the E.U. For more information go to the European Commission's press release:

http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/06/1586&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en

While this is great news please remember that it has not yet come into effect and does not mention the import of rabbit fur. The Fur Free Brighton campaign will continue as normal - read on for more info..

FUR FREE BRIGHTON

Well we had hoped that we had won this war and at one point Brighton was fur free. However now that winter is here it seems that the shops that had stopped selling fur are now back to their old tricks.  We have held a number of demonstrations against Kurt Geiger and it has also come to our attention that a number of other shops are also using fur trim. We have sent them a letter and information c.d. as well as some literature about the cruelty involved in the fur industry and we are calling on them to go beyond not selling fur but to change their policy so they will not sell fur in the future. We have had no response from these shops so now it is time to name and shame.

NAUTICALIA

There is a new craze in Britain for novelty toy cats that are made from rabbit fur. Most are shaped as a sleeping cat, and many are sold as "Intrepid Ships Cats" by a company called Nauticalia. These cats are made from the fur of rabbits which have been raised and killed in China; a country that supplies much of the rabbit fur and meat sold in Britain. at present we don't know of any shops in Brighton selling these cats as public opinion seems to be against them, however if you do come across anywhere with these please let us know. For more info on fur check out Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade www.caft.org.uk

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

bullet

Don't buy products that are made of real fur and boycott shops selling them.

bullet

Complain to shops you see selling these cats.

bullet

Inform us of any shops you see selling real fur.
